Support Independent Voices!

History and philosophy

Independent Voices is a program produced by a grassroots, volunteer run media collective based in the Triangle area of North Carolina, led by youth, women, and people of color. We cover local and international issues, activities, and movements for economic, social, and environmental justice. We work to uncover the wealth of progressive activism going on around us all the time – providing content that is largely absent from corporate mainstream media.

On From covering acts of civil disobedience protesting torture and executions, to covering the
workplace walkouts and struggles of the Raleigh sanitation workers and those at Smithfield Packing for dignity and democracy in the workplace, to talks and teach-ins on the U.S. role in war and peace in Middle East, to youth and LGBT activism in the Triangle, international issues, immigrant rights struggles, and community celebrations and protests – Independent Voices has provided a forum for exchange, education, and expression.

Content from our producers has been used by German public television, Democracy Now!, and PBS; our coverage has been featured in other local media such as The Independent Weekly, The Daily Tar Heel, News Channel 14 Carolina, and popular radio shows “Geet Bazaar” and “Traces of Faces and Places.” We have provided coverage and services to area non-profits, including the NC Justice Center, the Common Sense Foundation, UE 150, the NC Council of Churches, Interact of Wake County, and the NC Environmental Justice Network.

This year we were the winners of the 2006 Burke Award for Best Documentary Program. We are sponsored by several locally owned businesses* and sustained by individual donations. Independent Voices is a source for participatory grassroots media. We encourage and often feature content from community members for episodes of the show.

We welcome you to join us, either by joining the production team (no experience necessary – just passion!) or by financially supporting us so that we can continue covering these important stories and empowering those around us to make their own media!

So check us out on cable public access or attend one of our community screenings
